Chidori Theatre / Kaela Kwan

One of the joys of London is the small fringe theatres that are scattered around the city, often in unseen and unexpected locations. Using an interlocking timber junction system from Japanese precedent, this design creates a small loose-fit theatre just off the main Camden hipster drag, where audience and performers can mix more easily. Squeezed into a tight urban site between a railway viaduct and the back gardens of houses, the project uses the awkwardness of the site to suggest a fluid arrangement where the auditorium and other elements could be reconfigured to suit different kinds of performance, using also the surrounding exterior spaces and the vaults under the railway to good effect.
